JFK TWA Hotel Connie Airplane Project

Challenge

Today she is simply known as “Connie”. She is one of only four remaining L-1649A Lockheed Constellation airplanes in the world. Restored back to her majestic glory, Connie is now part of the $250 million dollar TWA Hotel project designed to transport visitors back to the early 1960’s to experience an age where air travel was glamorous. She welcomes vistors in style as a fully-restored one-of-a-kind cocktail lounge. As part of her transformation, Connie was equipped with an array of SpacePak products that perfectly addressed each of her HVAC challenges.

Solution

Four LAHP48 Solstice Extreme Air-to-Water Heat Pumps are located remotely in a bunker. Chilled or hot water is piped underground into the underbelly of the plane to three WCSP-3642J air handlers and one WCSP4860J air handler which provide conditioned fresh air to the plane through traditional round and linear slot diffusers located throughout the plane. Return air is brought back to the air handlers from multiple return grills under the seating of the plane. The air handlers are controlled by the use of the SpacePak SSIC and ZonePak Pro controls.

The ability to remotely place the Solstice Extreme Air-to-Water heat pumps away from the plane and out of the visitor’s sight as well as the ability to fit the 2-inch flexible duct work inside the walls of the fuselage made SpacePak the ideal system for this project. Additionally, the current gas moratorium denying new and expanded gas service in New York’s five boroughs, Westchester County and Long Island, made the Solstice Extreme an easy choice for this and many other projects.

NYC DCAS - 1 Centre Street

Challenge

The 1 Centre Street building, located in Lower Manhattan, is a historic, 39-story building built in 1914, and is home to the NYC DCAS Citywide Administrative Services. The Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) Division of Energy Management (DEM) is the hub for energy management in City buildings. DCAS plays a critical role in supporting our agency partners' progress towards the City's major emissions reduction and energy objectives.

Solution

Due to the age of the building and the inclusion of the DCAS, it was imperative to ensure that the retrofit of an aging HVAC system was done properly, and as efficiently as possible. Fujitsu and Ventacity were chosen to complete this project in a timely, and efficient manner.

LIRR Wyandanch Station

Challenge

For this new construction project the engineers intent was to reduce the liability and potential hazardous conditions of snow/ice build up on the platforms for travelers along the LIRR.

Solution

In this one example (of multiple stations installed along the line), Riello AR2000 boilers were implemented to provide unmatched boiler plant redundancy and simplicity of equipment service. This helps ensure that any potential system down time as a result of routine maintenance, etc. is kept to an absolute minimum without drastically affecting the performance of the critical path snow melt areas for the general public. As each of these snow melt platforms are raised and exposed below, there is a higher potential for ice and snow accumulation to occur which can quickly become hazardous to the general public. In addition to the modular concept boilers implemented, Taco SKV vertical inline self-sensing pumps were implemented which are programmed to maintain the specific designed system flow rate. The internal logic of the pump VFD’s allow them to automatically compensate for any system fouling over time to maintain proper flow rate while also providing a lead lag function without the need for additional controllers or PLC’s. A Taco iWorx controls platform was implemented for automatic snow melt system operation and control using precipitation and slab sensors with the potential for off-site access by LIRR facility personnel.

Heatherwood Properties Boiler Room

Challenge

A renovated rental community that offers residents a variety of affordable apartment styles and a host of amenities including a laundry pavilion, community center, and state of the art fitness center. Some buildings in the complex also sport views of beautiful Patchogue Lake. A appropriately sized and reliable boiler to aid in the production of heating and domestic hot water is essential for both the community spaces, and rental units.

Solution

The Riello Array Boiler equipped with Taco MPT Tank and ECM pumps were provided and installed to more than handle the DHW load of the complex.
